It was April 2021 and my wife and I were in Hobart Tasmania on our Honeymoon. It was the trip we desperately needed after our big day. Tassie is just delightful. The people the food and the sites were incredible.
My wife being the planner that she is, organised the most amazing places to dine at everyday. From farm to table meals, the best seafood I’ve ever had to extravagant meals while being inside works of art (crazy sht) I had it all organised for me and all I had to do was drive there. It was win win because the roads in Tassie are what those from dreamland. How has nobody set up a driver experience business there?? Within an hours drive from Hobart, you’re taken through winding mountain roads (which seem to be frequently visited by drifters) rolling hills, flat plains and coast roads. Oh and the speed limit is mostly 100km/hr. There is no wonder the Targa Tasmania is such a popular event.
One thing I wanted to experience in Tassie was the car culture. We missed the Targa Tasmania by a couple of weeks but I got something better. I got to meet and spend some time with a local car group, The Torque.
Organiser, Jesse Dunlop had arranged for a meetup in their usual spot and then a cruise up to Mount Wellington. It just so happened that after a week of perfect weather, on this particular Sunday morning we were greeted with a polar blast. It was so bloody cold that snow forced the closure of the higher mountain road which only allowed us halfway up. Sure we didn’t get to see the view but getting to hangout with these guys and girls was better than any view.
I couldn’t get over the diversity of cars and owners. From an L plater to seasoned drivers, JDM to Euro, classics and daily drivers in between. The best part of all was we all hung out together. That may have a little to do with a fire at the cafe halfway up the mountain but after seeing this group together, I like to think that all meets are like this.
Jesse organises car shows, meets, cruises and dyno days for the local car scene. Check it out at The Torque Tas
It was a pleasure to meet you all and I look forward to coming back to hangout again. Thanks for having me.
